Abwärts – Amok Koma (1980)

Abwärts is a West German postpunk group from Hamburg. Members Mark Chung and FM Einheit would leave the group in the early 1980s to join theBerlin-based band Einstürzende Neubauten.

Germany’s Abwarts created a neat fusion of punk energy, electronics, motoric beat and instrumental overplay. Most notable were “Maschinenland”, “Verzählt”, while also creating more edge and depth on the likes of “Monday On My Mind”, the minimal “Bel Ami”, the paranoid atmosphere of “Unfall”, the complex “Mehr”, the quasi-ethnic “Türkenblues”, the reggae tinge of “Neon Kind” etc.
